As you know, we live in an environment where it's "blink" and you missed it. Still, there is always an urgent need to stay abreast of what is happening so that you can stay ahead in business.
I own several companies and, frankly, I don't think a day goes by that I'm not thinking about how to make things better and improve our competitive advantage in our industries.
A few days ago I read an article about a luxury yacht company that had been in business for generations, and even though they had client orders in the tens of millions of dollars, they fired everyone and closed their doors. Shaken.
They were hemorrhaging money and not paying attention to the changing wind.
The reality is that I can sit here today and write what you want to find in business trends, and then write the same article a year from now, with a different perspective on the evolution of business and society.
I am Still, there are some areas that I think will remain constant and that you should focus on in your company.
Always focus more on millennials.
For decades and decades, baby boomers were the "darlings" of generations because of their sheer size and purchasing power. As Boomers are now elderly, the same can be said of Millennials.
They will be a force for years to come, and already are and are the first generation to be pure digital natives. Your products and services should be marketed to them and how they think.
By 2020, Millennials will have an estimated $1.4 trillion in spending power.
Be comfortable with AI, IoT, and ML.
The buzzwords like AI, IoT, and ML used to be, are no more. They are not the future. They are current.
Most of you know about AI (Artificial Intelligence), and IoT (Internet of Things), but you might not have heard about ML (Machine Learning). Machine learning is when computers do things without being programmed because they are learning them for themselves.
Through machine learning, we're powered by self-driving cars, great web search tools, practical speech recognition programs, and a host of other platforms. As technology evolves, all of these elements will play an increasingly important role in life and business.
The Remote Workforce.
My team prefers to be onsite, but for some functions and aspects of our work, these elements are outsourced. More than 40% of American workers are currently working remotely, without being present at their place of business at all times.
This trend creates a demand to properly train remote employees through video conferencing platforms, especially for social media and programming positions. All you need is a computer and the internet.
Go through the clutter.
The way you brand your business is important. People are drowning in data and information, and you have to be able to follow up quickly.
Branding, including names, logos, etc., creates instant recognition. With great branding, you are perceived as an authority, successful and trustworthy because you pay attention to details.
Also, it simplifies expectations. Customers find you. You can hire better talent. Candidates find you instead of applying for a position in an unknown company. Because of branding, it is easy to create more businesses with the same name.
There is an opportunity to buy a business.
Baby Boomer retirements mean there are more businesses for sale and Millennials will buy them and then reinvent the companies they buy.
Keep an eye on your competition because there is always an opportunity to buy out an existing competitor. For example, you can buy their entire client base, or maybe they've specialized in e-commerce, and you're able to bring that into your portfolio.
